Belviq and Belviq XR are brand-name lorcaserin products made and sold by Eisai Inc. Lorcaserin is a prescription weight-loss drug designed to help people struggling with obesity curb their hunger. After approving the product, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a safety trial.

The results of the trial were shocking, as the drug significantly increased patients’ risk for several types of cancer, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer.

Although the FDA recalled Belviq in February of 2020, many people had already taken the drug in an effort to lose weight and be healthier. Belviq never should have been on the market, and the manufacturer must be held accountable.
